The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf has made it to Karachi, after opening several outlets in various cities including Lahore, Islamabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot. It is wildly popular for its breakfast and coffee but remains to be seen how it fares in the food capital of Pakistan.
What do I order at Coffee Bean (Karachi)?
We are so glad you asked. Over the past few weeks, we have tried a couple of things from their menu and we have thoughts, recommendations and ~warnings~. Here goes:
1.
Do Try: Coffee
Yes, if you are into specialty coffee and looking for a cortado or a piccolo, Coffee Bean might not be the place for you but if you are a fan of your lattes, cappuccinos, frappes – you are likely to hang at Coffee Bean more than you think.
The popular opinion about their coffee is that they are really expensive. However, their serving size is also a lot bigger than what we have seen anywhere else. A regular order of a caramel latte is basically a full meal.
Basically, we won’t mind picking up coffee here now and then, especially when you need a place to sit.
2.
Don't Try: Bagels or Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Even though the idea of having bagels and a grilled cheese sandwich can be tempting, it’s definitely not Coffee Bean’s forte. The grilled cheese is priced at Rs.690 + Tax and it is pretty much just slices of cheese sandwiched in bread. Would have appreciated if the cheese was at least melted. The bagel is too bread-y and at some point you feel like ditching the bottom half of it because it’s not adding anything by way of flavour.
3. Do Try: Carrot Cake
For a carrot cake that you can get off-the-shelf this is actually a pretty decent choice. It is moist, topped with cream cheese frosting and walnuts and has this nice cinnamon edge to it.
Sure there are other places where you can get a richer carrot cake but this definitely works great as an off-the-shelf, doesn’t-have-to-be-preordered option.
4. Don't Try: Chicken Pot Pie
Chicken pot pie but make it half-air. Priced at Rs. 350, this tastes quite like a pot pie but the stuffing tends to get a bit dry and can be improved both in terms of quantity and variety of ingredients.
Chicken patties or quiche from a local bakery provides better value.
